The most common problems with AC systems are easily handles by proper maintenance, it is the bigger issues that arise that require a professional, below are some common issues that would be considered DIY repairs.
Air conditioner will not turn on: start by checking the thermostat and make sure it is correctly set and if batteries need to be changed. Check the electrical panel for tripped breaker and reset if needed. Check the drain line to make sure that it is flowing and not clogged. Monthly maintenance should include filter changes and drain line cleaning which requires running water through the drain line and making sure it is running clear at the open drain line near your outside unit.
Air conditioner not blowing cool air: verify that the thermostat settings are set to cool and auto, then replace the air filter; this should be changed quarterly in winter months and almost monthly in summer months as the air conditioner is on more often when it is hot outdoors. A clean filter can increase efficiency and indoor air quality. Make sure that the outside unit is not obstructed by grass or debris.
Dripping water from your air conditioner: Check the drain line for obstructions or clogging.
